THEFT-ONLY BIKE INSURANCE

Theft cover. Just theft. From £[THEFT-ONLY ANNUAL] a year.

It covers your bike being stolen, at home and away from home. It does not cover damage to the bike, injury to you, or your liability to anyone else — those come with full cover, or with our optional packages.

WHAT YOU GET

What theft-only covers — and what it does not

Both lists are here in full. The right-hand one is why this costs what it does.

Covered

Theft away from home
Your bike stolen while it is with you, or locked to an immovable object through the frame with an approved lock, with signs of forced entry. Your own garden, your driveway and a council bike hangar all count as away from home.
Theft at home
Your bike stolen from inside your home, from a locked garage, outbuilding or approved metal shed, or from a communal hallway where it was locked to an immovable object — in each case with forcible and violent entry or exit. The conditions are set out below.
Theft from a vehicle
One bike, subject to the vehicle conditions below.
Replacement bike hire up to £500
While a paid theft claim is being settled. Hired from a recognised bike dealer, agreed with us first, up to £500 in any one period of insurance.
Bikes worth £400 to £15,000
Settled at the current equivalent replacement cost of your bike, less the excess.
Up to five bikes, £30,000 combined
On one policy.

Not covered on this product

Accidental and malicious damage
Crash damage, potholes, vandalism, and damage from a failed theft attempt. Add-on, or take full cover.
Personal accident
Injury to you while riding. Available only as our Bronze, Silver or Gold personal cover package.
Personal liability
£1,000,000, for injuring someone or damaging their property. We do not sell it on its own — it comes with the Bronze, Silver or Gold package, and covers the named policyholder only.
Accessories, clothing and bike boxes
Add-on. Covered only when stolen or damaged at the same time as the bike. A fabric bag is not a bike box.
Riding overseas
Add-on, 30 or 60 days a year. Without it you are covered in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
Organised racing
Add-on, for organised events where a winner is selected. Sportives and charity events are already included. Professional racing is excluded, except time trials, and stunts are excluded outright.
Business use
Courier work, deliveries and carrying paying passengers. Commuting is fine.

The four conditions that decide a theft claim

Most declined theft claims fail on one of these. They are short, so we put them on the front page instead of page 14.

01 — THE LOCK

Lock it through the frame to something immovable, with the right lock

  • Up to £1,000 of bike value — a Sold Secure Silver or Gold lock
  • Above £1,000 — a Sold Secure Gold lock
  • Thatcham-approved motorcycle locks are accepted at any bike value
  • Any other lock we have accepted in writing also qualifies
  • A lock rated for a cheaper bike than yours does not qualify

02 — THE TIME LIMIT

How long the bike can be left locked up

  • 12 hours away from home
  • 24 hours at your workplace, or in a cycle rack inside a railway station
  • No limit in the transition area of an organised triathlon or duathlon you are riding
  • "Away from home" includes your own garden, your driveway and a council bike hangar

03 — AT HOME, AND IN A VEHICLE

Where the bike is kept

  • At home: inside your house, flat or lockable room with the security devices in use; or a locked garage, outbuilding or shed meeting our lock standard with the bike locked to an immovable object inside; or a Secured by Design metal bike shed; or a communal hallway with the bike locked to an immovable object
  • There must be forcible and violent entry or exit in every case
  • In a vehicle: one bike, out of sight, everything locked, forced entry — and between 9pm and 6am the vehicle needs a Thatcham alarm, immobiliser or steering lock. Outside the UK, a factory-fitted alarm or immobiliser

04 — THE EVIDENCE

What we need from you

  • Photos of your bikes, uploaded within 30 days of buying the policy. Miss this and the cover can be invalidated
  • The lock key plus a receipt showing the lock's make and model — or what is left of the lock
  • Proof that you own the bike
  • A police crime reference number

LOCK CHECKER

Does your lock qualify?

Two answers and you know where you stand. No email required, and it gives the same answer before and after you buy.

Why it's here

The lock rule is the condition buyers most often get wrong, and it is checked at claim rather than at purchase. Better to find out now.

That lock qualifies at £[VALUE]

Lock the bike through the frame to something immovable and you have met the lock condition. Keep the key and the lock's receipt — you need both to claim.

[LOCK] is not enough at £[VALUE]

Above £1,000 of bike value the policy needs a Sold Secure Gold lock, or a Thatcham-approved motorcycle lock. A Silver lock would leave a theft claim uncovered.

Our customers get up to 40% off Hiplok: DX £30, Gold £40, E-DX £50.

We can't tell from that

Look for a Sold Secure sticker or a Thatcham mark on the lock body, or check the model on the Sold Secure website. If it isn't rated, it doesn't qualify — whatever it cost.

Questions people ask

Is my bike covered at home?
Yes, and the conditions at home are different from the ones away from home. At home the bike is covered inside your house, flat or a lockable room with your security devices in use; in a locked garage, outbuilding or shed that meets our lock standard, with the bike locked to an immovable object inside; in a Secured by Design metal bike shed; or in a communal hallway with the bike locked to an immovable object. In every case there has to be forcible and violent entry or exit. Your own garden, your driveway and a council bike hangar are treated as away from home, so the lock and time-limit rules apply there instead.
What if my bike is damaged rather than stolen?
Theft-only does not cover it. Accidental and malicious damage is an add-on at the cover step, and it is standard on full cover. That includes crash damage, potholes, vandalism, and damage caused by a failed attempt to steal the bike.
What is the excess?
£75, or 10% of the claim payment, whichever is greater. It applies to bike claims, and if a claim involves more than one of your bikes an excess is payable on each.
What is my bike worth, for this policy?
What it would cost to replace it today with the current equivalent model, new. That is the figure to insure it for, and it is the basis we settle on. If you insure it for less, any settlement is reduced in proportion.
Can I insure an e-bike?
Yes, if it is road-legal in the UK as an electrically assisted pedal cycle. A twist-and-go throttle is only eligible if the throttle works in walk mode. ePeds, iPeds and anything with a moped-like appearance are not eligible.
How many bikes can I add?
Up to five, £30,000 combined.
Do I need an account to see the price?
No. You see the price first, and we hold it for 30 days.
What do I have to do after I buy?
Upload photos of your insured bikes to our website within 30 days. It is a condition of the policy — missing it can invalidate your cover.
